Project Title: War on Stage: The Representation of War-making in the Tragedies of Euripides

Principal Advisor: Dr David Pritchard

Project Abstract: This will be a comprehensive study of the representation of polemos ('war') in one of the ancient world's most important playwrights. Euripides dramatised war's high cost for civilians and the war crimes which the victors of some mythical battles committed, but whether this can be read as a criticism of the bellicosity of Athens is debatable. This thesis will also examine the relationship between tragedy and the other public discourses in classical Athens such as the funeral orations, assembly speeches, and law court speeches.
