Project Title: The Revival of Western Martial Arts in Australia, 1969-2011

Principal Advisor: Associate Professor Martin Crotty

Project Abstract: The Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) movement involves the reconstruction and performance of traditionally masculine martial arts that originated in Europe. This study, which is to be an oral history, will provide the first historical interpretation of the HEMA movement within Australia and is positioned at the intersection of studies into heritage, physical culture, masculinity and whiteness, and as such, seeks to advance knowledge in these areas. This will be achieved by conducting a thematic analysis of the history of the movement using core concepts from within each of these research areas.
