As you progress through your candidature there should be a distinct development in the quality of work. The Milestones process assesses this progress by measuring your written and oral presentations against a set of standards at each stage.

Confirmation of Candidature

At the Confirmation of Candidature Milestone you should be able to demonstrate in the written component of the submission:
  • that the topic is sharply defined and the parameters of the research have been clearly established
  • an awareness of critical issues and debates pertaining to thesis topic
  • an appropriate and rigorously developed research plan and strategies
  • a logical shape or structure to the research
  • realistic and adequate aims and objectives for the period leading up to the Mid-Candidature Review

In the oral component of the submission you should show an ability to deliver an interesting and engaging presentation that builds on the submitted confirmation document. You should try to go beyond the material from the confirmation document, even if initial ideas and findings are tentative and qualified.

Mid-Candidature Review

At the Mid-Candidature Review Milestone you should be able to demonstrate in the written component of the submission:
  • completion of appropriate portion of the thesis PhD or MPhil standard depending on candidature
  • realistic and adequate aims and objectives for period leading to the Thesis Review

In the oral component of the submission you should show an ability to deliver a presentation of academic conference standard.

Thesis Review

At the Thesis Review Milestone you should be able to demonstrate in the written component of the submission the completion, or near- completion, of a thesis suitable for examination.

In the oral component of the submission you should show an ability to deliver a presentation of academic conference standard.

Timing of Milestones

You will be advised by your RHD Administrative Officer approximately 6 weeks before you are scheduled to attend your milestone interview. You will then be required to submit any milestone documentation 10 business days prior to your scheduled milestone interview.

Note that there is some degree of flexibility in the timing for each milestone, as indicated below. Discipline RHD Advisors will use this flexibility to try and accommodate candidates’ presentations within scheduled seminar programmes or internal symposiums.

  • Confirmation of Candidature Milestone – 12 months after commencement (or part-time equivalent)
  • Mid-Candidature Review Milestone – after 24 months of candidature (or part-time equivalent)
