The milestone requirements are tailored to the stage of candidature. In essence, we are interested in your plans and intentions at the Confirmation of Candidature Milestone, at the Mid-Candidature Milestone and in your thesis at the Thesis Review Milestone. Your milestone committee members will also discuss your candidature with you in a broader sense – including matters such as conference presentations, publications and teaching experience.
  • All RHD candidates, at all milestones, are required to submit a copy of their up-to-date RHD Student Academic Portfolio (RHD Student Academic Portfolio Form). This should be signed by both the candidate and the principal supervisor and should be submitted to the School RHD Administrative Officer (rhd-hapi@uq.edu.au) no later than ten days prior to the milestone presentation and interview.
  • All RHD candidates, at Confirmation and Thesis Review milestones, are required to do a 30 minute oral presentation (normally including ten minutes for questions from the audience). These will be scheduled by the Discipline RHD Advisor.
  • All RHD candidates, at all milestones, are required to attend a 30-minute interview with a milestones committee. The committee will, after interviewing the candidate, provide written feedback and advice and will convey their decision as to whether the candidate has satisfactorily completed the milestone requirements.
In addition:
  • Candidates at the Confirmation of Candidature Milestone are required to submit a preliminary bibliography and a written draft version of their oral presentation. The written draft of the oral presentation should be approximately 2500-3000 words in length. There are no requirements for how extensive the bibliography should be, but as a guide, PhD students tend to provide evidence of having consulted around 80 pertinent works; MPhil students around 50. This should be submitted to the School RHD Administrative Officer (rhd-hapi@uq.edu.au) no later than ten days prior to the milestone presentation and interview.
  • Candidates at the Mid-Candidature Review Milestone are required to submit a ‘research document’ which shows some of the results of their endeavours to date. The research document may be a draft thesis chapter (or part thereof) or an article or other publication, whether accepted for publication or under consideration. The research document should be a minimum of 5000 words in length for PhD candidates; 3000 for MPhil candidates. This should be submitted to the School RHD Administrative Officer (rhd-hapi@uq.edu.au) no later than ten days prior to the milestone presentation and interview.
  • Candidates at the Thesis Review Milestone are required to submit a completed chapter of their thesis. The completed chapter should be a minimum of 5000 words in length for PhD candidates; 3000 for MPhil candidates. This should be submitted to the School RHD Administrative Officer (rhd-hapi@uq.edu.au) no later than ten days prior to the milestone presentation and interview.
