Project Title: Emotional Agents – Reconceiving the place of emotion in agency in light of recent revisions in theorising about the self

Principal Advisor: Dr Aurelia Armstrong

Project Abstract: There is growing acknowledgement in analytic philosophy of the self that certain traditionally neglected factors such as social situation, embodiment and non-transparency must be accounted for by any tenable theory of the self, along with challenges to longstanding assumptions about activity/passivity distinctions. This has led to a number of more or less successful reconstruals of the self as variously embedded, embodied, opaque and enacted. My project assesses and appropriates two such reconstruals of the self to outline a more substantive, multi-faceted role for emotion in agency, in the broader context of the recent turn to action in contemporary philosophy of emotion.
