Project Title: Relationship Building: Seventh-day Adventist connections with Nationalist China's political and financial elite

Principal Advisor: Associate Professor Chi-Kong Lai

Project Abstract: Seventh-day Adventist missionaries in China formed a network of relationships with the political and financial elite during the first half of the 20th century. The church was able to leverage these relationships into monetary donations and legal assistance, and contacts between missionaries and the societal elite were regularly reported in the church's English-language magazine The Review and Herald.

Discourse surrounding SDA missionary activity in China and missionary relationships with Guomindang officials and other members of the societal elite served two distinct purposes. Firstly it contributed to the consolidation of the denominations self-image and it also validated their eschatological theology.
