Project Title: Between the Wall and the Towers: Performing National Security for an Inattentive America

Principal Advisor: Associate Professor Chris Dixon

Project Abstract: In the absence of a dominant foreign policy paradigm such as “The Cold War” or “The War on Terror,” how is foreign policy made comprehensible and thus legitimate to an American public increasingly dubious about the desirability of unfettered American globalism? Focussing principally on the administration of President Bill Clinton (1993-2001), Between The Wall and the Towers examines the way national security issues were framed for popular consumption during the 1990s; paying particular attention to the impact of gender discourses, and the role of emotion in the legitimation of foreign policy narratives.
