Project Title: Beyond the Pillars of Hercules: Identity and Self-Representation in the Atlantic Ports and Harbours of Western Hispania from the Late Republic to the Third Century AD

Principal Advisor: Dr Janette McWilliam

Project Abstract: This study, through the collection and examination of inscriptional evidence, will explore the ways in which the people who lived in the ports and fluvial harbours of Lusitania represented their lives and achievements during the Republican and early Imperial periods. It will focus on cultural change, and ask whether or not people began to alter the way they represented their lives and constructed their identities as they came into more frequent contact with Rome. The interpretation of inscriptions and their contextualisation will be supported by evidence from art, iconography and religious practice. The information from each port and harbour will then be compared to that of a number of inland towns, to highlight the differences in cultural change between coastal and inland societies.
